Oh this poor world. It was only a matter of time before the ideals on which the United States was founded would be sold for profit. The value of liberty has been mortgaged. Life is expensive in so many different ways. Very few rules means the value of the land has been sold to the highest bidder. Seems like there’s very little value left to earn. All the bravado of the post-war era was fun, especially for those that made money from it. But the fun might be over, the freedom’s been mostly squandered. And while numerous technological advancements have arguably made life better, other advancements might very well be humanity’s undoing.
Drone delivery of high-end genes
Bluetooth sex in driverless cars
Faraway trolls bully family bond scenes
No doc loans foreclose on liberty
One bad apple spoils the bunch
Wide-eyed ideal deals die
Eat freedom's benefits for lunch
No doc loans foreclose on liberty
Innovation unfettered lost its way
Half-baked ideas go for billions
Tech titans enslave the day
No doc loans foreclose on liberty
All you really need is food and shelter
But main stream is the country's coaster
Veer from it you face helter skelter
No doc loans foreclose on liberty
Sure the victors do deserve some spoils
But the extremes will lead to some recoils
When cyborgs rule, with too much fuel
No doc loans foreclose on liberty
Oh wow. What just happened? I blacked out there for a minute. Seems that that was an economic commentary in rap form, I suppose. That just sort of came to me. It’s what’s on my mind I suppose.
Something just feels bad about where we’re at right now as a country. Social media, or maybe the internet as a whole seems to be part of the problem. Think about it … can you go even a full day without checking on some sort of connected device? Can they be trusted? Maybe it’s ok to type notes or write a poem on some sort of word processor, but even that feels like too much tech. Why not write on a piece of paper.
How far back do we need to look to find the time, the era when things made sense? When life was about peace, respect and happiness? Maybe the information age has been one big fantasy that will come to an end, and what’s old (from the mid-90s) will be new again. Or maybe we go back to the 1940s when the US hadn’t really established itself as the leader of the free world? Maybe all the celebration of the allied victory, while certainly deserved, was however a bit overdone? Going back even further, I’m not sure that life before the Industrial Revolution is the frame of mind we should be aiming for, but it’s interesting to consider.
New technology will not stop being made. But it makes sense to wonder how much of it will truly be valuable to society. If it puts nearly the whole world out of jobs, except for the savvy few, then there are likely to be some problems. And maybe nobody cares. Maybe the progression of new technology will continue to move fast and break things. And good simple people with little or no interest in such things could be crushed by the pace of change. It’s already happening. And there are certainly plenty of examples in history of winners and losers as things change. Standing in the way of change rarely seems to work. So why should this be any different.
These are the technologically delivered thoughts of a possible Luddite. (look it up)
